Sometimes, making little changes in the way we think about things can bring big changes to how we feel.
Everyone gets into a “rut” at one time or another (and if you are like me, this happens regularly). Why? Because we are humans and are fallible beings. But like anything else, we all have the capacity to learn, grow, evolve and improve ourselves. It is a basic concept of the Law of Attraction.
If you “think” good…you “feel” good…when you feel good, you “attract” good into your life. This isn’t my ideas talking, this isn’t some “rah rah” speech. It is real, provable information that actually works!
I want to help you folks ease into this type of a mindset by implementing a few basic principles of Perception Management. I hope the next few days can prove to you that whatever you perceive right now, right this minute, can be changed with tiny, baby steps to modify the way you think and feel.
Folks, it’s time for an Atti-Tune-Up! 5-days of baby steps to interrupt the way you think or feel and some small actions to take that can modify your perception of things!
How many times have we said (or heard) some of the following? What if your mindset changed those questions and modified the way you respond to situations?
I would if I could, but I can’t so I won’t…. What if you instead said: I can and I am (notice I didn’t say “I will”)
If only I had more time, then I could…. What if you instead said: I have all the time I need, I can fit this in.
If only I had more money, than I could…. What if you instead said: I have a livable income, I am developing a givable income.
If only I had more support, then I could…. What if you instead said: I can leverage the support I have.
I know what you probably are thinking. Dave, if this is so easy, why isn’t everyone doing it??!! The answer is simple. For many of us, we have never been shown the basics. We get too wrapped up in the “how” before we fully get clear on our “why” or our “what.” We are so busy focusing on the things we “think” we want, that we don’t manifest on appropriately on our why and what.
Our lives are full of potential negative thought. And that really is ok as long as you don’t dwell, and you recognize the negativity while you are thinking it. The secret is to not give it power over you.
Instead, INTERRUPT the negative thought and replace it. Believe it or not, once you learn to actually recognize that you are having a negative thought, interrupting it is very easy. For me, I interrupt negative thoughts by literally saying out loud (and occasionally people see/hear me and think I am a kook – but that’s ok) …NOOOO I am not thinking this way. Then I put on a song with an awesome groove, or I think of a cool poem or an inspirational post I read or whatever, and my emotional state changes. Immediately after this change, I think about something super groovy like my family or friends or my work – anything I find to be a positive influence. This my friends is what the Principles of Perception Management are all about. I recognized a perception (negative thought) I didn’t want, and I changed it directly and modified my behavior.
So here is the exercise. As you review, you will find it quite easy to follow. The challenge lies in keeping a brief journal and recording everything you feel. Be sure to capture just a sentence or two outlining how you feel.
Day One: Make a list of 5 things in your life right now that you know you should be thankful for and say them out loud in a “thank you” mantra! Record in your journal exactly what you feel after you made your list and said everything out loud.
Day Two: No complaining – go a full day without complaining about a single thing (that includes thinking about complaining). Look, you are human, some negative thinking will likely creep into your thoughts throughout the day…recognize it and push it aside. I mean it NO complaining in any way, shape, or form. Write down in your journal exactly how you felt by not complaining on this day.
Day Three: Express gratitude directly to at least 2 important people in your life. Yes, see them in person or call them up and tell them “live” how thankful you are for them being in your life. After you do this, write down in your journal exactly how you feel.
Day Four: Spend 30 minutes doing something that makes YOU happy. Maybe it’s painting, playing music, taking a walk or whatever (it can be anything, just be sure it is focused on ‘you’ and perhaps try to be disconnected from all media). Again, after you complete this, write in your journal exactly how you feel.
Day Five: Reflect on the first 4 days and what you accomplished. Was it easy? How did it feel after each of these tiny tasks? Now go to a mirror and give yourself a mirror pep talk. Huh? That’s right! Literally, go to a mirror and express to yourself OUT LOUD, all the things you are thankful for, anything that is going well in your life, how amazing you are, and how you can help yourself and others feel incredible. And yes, you guess it, write in your journal exactly how you feel.
I promise by the end of the day 5 exercise, you will feel better, stronger, more “chill” and in an improved state of mind to tackle whatever challenge you may be facing. Stay tuned for upcoming blog on the “Art of Interrupting the Way You Think & Feel.”
