Sometimes you have to take common phrases with every day meaning and SHAKE things up! I hope in the next few paragraphs I succeed in doing so. I want to change the way we all think about being POOR or being RICH!
You can learn how to change the way you think about anything and everything!
Sometimes you have to take common phrases with every day meaning and SHAKE things up! I hope in the next few paragraphs I succeed in doing so. I want to change the way we all think about being POOR or being RICH!
Welcome to my written version of my Perception Maker Moment series (this is the requested follow-up to my recent video).
The famous Zig Ziglar has a great way of looking at entrepreneurs. In fact, he coined the phrase “wantrepreneur” long before you hear guys like Mark Cuban use this label on the popular TV show, Shark Tank. Ziglar looked at wantrepreneurs as a bucket of people who “pass on opportunities regularly” or POOR and compared them to people who seized any and every opportunity each time they came along. He spoke a lot about his definition of luck às “preparation + opportunity = luck.
To me, this is a great foundation, but in today’s age of the 15 second attention span theater and all the stimuli we each face in our lives, this thinking doesn’t’ go far enough anymore.
I love the POOR. acronym, but I want to contrast it with something different. In my recent video, I presented a Perception Maker Moment (PMM) on what I perceive as the difference between being a positive person and having a positive mindset. Additionally, I also wrote an article on the same subject.
Here I want to take things a lot further than having a positive mindset. I want to discuss having a RICH. mindset. To me, this is the “engine” that can drive us all!
Let’s first break down what Ziglar was talking about when he said “wantrepreneurs” pass on opportunities regularly. This often means the person wasn’t prepared to take some type of action. Either they were scared or thought it was too hard or would require too much work or don’t have enough time and on and on. Their reasons (or excuses) seem endless. They “want” to have their business grow, but seldom do what is necessary to make it happen.
The great Tony Robbins always says people like this have what he calls a “I should do it mindset.” And as we all know, life is full of people who always say, “I would have,” “I could have”, and of course, “I should have.” We don’t hear enough people say, “I did!”
What happens is, these people let so many great opportunities come into their lives and quickly leave without taking any real action to seize them and take advantage. As Robbins goes on to further say, unless or until you get a “must do mindset,” you will be stuck with “I should have” and simply (as he says) “should all over yourself, time and time again!”
Well, I don’t know about you readers, but I hate people “shoulding” all over themselves and I am here to help! I want to help you create a RICH. mindset and end your “shoulding” once and for all!
Let’s keep things simple and start with the basics: What the heck do I mean by RICH? It has nothing to do with earning money or an accumulation of valuable things in your life. In fact, it really is about #perceptionmanagement and exercising your #emotionalintelligence muscles!
R = raise (decision to take action) – get aware of what outcome you really want!
I = intensity (focus) – get excited, get intense about your decision to take action!
C = Challenge (Interrupt/disrupt) – interrupt the way you are thinking and feeling –
NOW!
H = History – how you have been thinking or feeling about all the stimuli in your life!
RAISE your INTENSITY and CHALLENGE your HISTORY.
Ok, so you must be scratching your head now, right? What the heck is Dave talking about??!! Simply put, you have implemented the principles of Perception Management and get into the RICH mindset.
First, you must decide that you need to make a change. Just this decision alone will begin to
RAISE your level of thinking, and your intensity and excitement start to rise. Many people get to this stage and falter. How awful is it to know you want or need to make a change, but you never really do anything about it? It makes you feel inadequate and continues the cycle of “I can’t do this” thinking.
The answer to getting you to actually take some action is this: you must get super clear on the change you want to make – do NOT worry about the “how” you will make it yet. In past articles, you may have seen me discuss the importance of being super clear on “who” and “why” you are before worrying about the “how.” Focus your INTENSITY on this clarity.
Ok ya’ll (yes, I live in the deep south – Georgia), you are getting some nice momentum going! With your new-found super clarity + I am hoping you have kicked your intensity into high gear, you must now CHALLENGE the way you have been historically thinking and feeling about things. You must modify your perceptions! (We are moving from “should do” to “must do” here).
You must look at how you have been perceiving things (your HISTORY of perceiving situations, events, products, services – you name it). By challenging your history, you actually “interrupt” or “disrupt” the way you are thinking and feeling about people, products, services, or anything else in your world.
Once you have successfully interrupted this thought process, you can now modify your perceptions and achieve whatever desired outcomes you want. You will have achieved a RICH mindset! And what’s even more great about this achievement is, that as you practice your newly acquired skill, it gets easier and easier to have this mindset automatically. And even better, you will want to share and teach others!
Are you ready to take a leap of faith (faith in yourself)? Do you want to approach business or marketing strategy (or your life) with a set of completely new ideas and skills? Do you need a dynamic speaker to present at a corporate development or sales meeting event? If you are looking for an “Atti-Tune-Up” or gaining a RICH mindset – I can help!
